  • Adding Images in Posts

      In order to add an image to a discussion, you need to first have a url to the image. This means that you have to upload the image to somewhere on the internet.

      One easy way to do this is to use www. www.postimage.com.

      You need to upload your image (remember anyone can see the image by reading a posting here, or other methods). After you upload the image you need to copy the 'html' line and paste it into a discussion comment.

      Here is the format of an image in html. (only needed if you do not use postimage.org)

      <img src="http://site.com/pictlink.jpg"/>

      This forum does not use BBCode - rather it uses html.

      --Tom

  • Adding Link

      You can add a link to a posting: Copy the template below, and replace xxx with the URL, and yyy with what you want to call it (which can be the same as the URL).

      <a href="xxx">yyy</a>

    We have a issued a point release for Deep. The newest version is Deep 1.1.0.
    (If you have Deep installed Sparkle should catch it for you and ask to update.)

    Of note in this release:
    • Ratings are now available to use and search with
    • Auto-completion of Tags as you type is in place (there you go, Rolf! 8^), and
    • Photoshop files should retain their Tags.

    Enjoy!

    I'm sure it's a worthy update for some, but Deep is still exhibiting the issues which are stopping me from buying it. The selection of images is still painful - shift clicking has no effect for multiple selections from a group. More problematic for me is the limit on the number of folders shown in the 'location' part of the selection window. This STILL seems to be limited to a pre set number of folders which means that the folder structure in my main image storage volume is not all visible.

    If you were to sort these 2 issues out (as was indicated a few months ago), I'd buy it like a shot...!

    Thanks

    <strong>Guest:</strong><br /><br />Since upgrading to 1.1, Deep is no longer working. When I mouse over a color it will give me the number of images that have that color. But when I select the color, no images appear.

    Also, isn't it possible to build a database of the colors of my images so that I don't have to wait 5 minutes every time I launch the program, waiting for Deep to search my disk? I understand it would need updating, but having to start all over again each time I launch the program makes it almost unusable.

    @Guest:
    Is Deep the only thing you've updated on your machine?

    Deep shouldn't be "starting over" on every launch. When Deep launches, it writes a palette file to images it finds so it can match them. This is process can be interrupted and will pick up on the next launch.

    Can I re-download version 1.0 somewhere? 1.1 is just not working for me.
    Thanks
  1.
    We generally don't remove the old versions from our web site, so you can look at the current url for 1.1, and figure out the 1.0 release: (ok - for this version it is not so easy - there is a '.0' i had to remove. )

    Right now we are at
    http://www.ironicsoftware.com/downloads/Deep_1.1.0.zip

    The url for 1.0 is:
    http://www.ironicsoftware.com/downloads/Deep_1.0.zip

    Note that since I changed the way the color DB works between 1 and 1.1, when you switch, it will have to recalculate colors for all documents. This can take a while, (like 5 min to an hour) depending on how many images you have.

    If there is something specific not working with 1.1, tell me and perhaps I can fix it soon - we are planning on releasing 1.1.1 in the next week.

    <strong>Guest:</strong><br /><br />I am the guest who left the message on 4/27. I hadn't checked back until today. I installed 1.1.1 and the performance is outstanding! Deep no longer builds the database from scratch each time I launch, and I'm able to select the colors and other search items and have images show as they should.

    I'm very happy with the program.

    Starting to use Deep. I am very happy so far. Immediately I see something I Need though. I am using Deep for sorting through massive duplicate files. And then keeping visually and tag-istically oriented. I think on the upper section of the window, where you have a single photo displayed as you click on the scroll line on the lower screen there could be more and very important information.

    1) You could show the file path. I could see where the image was located as I was viewing it.
    2) You could show the file size. Yes I know it is around the image you click on in the lower window, but having it in one place as I review the photo I select, would make good sense to me.
    3) I don't know if it is out of the author's scope or not, but it would also be nice to show EXIF data as well. You have all that space going to waste. Might as well make good use of some of it (yes I am aware that some space is a good thing). I tried adding this to a database I Was building once and I know there are source code EXIF products one can incorporate relatively easily. I did a quick search and I think this is one such product; EXIF-O-Matic.
    4) Definitely last but not least, please have an area where I can add folders. Allow me to drag images I select up onto the folders. This would allow me to use Deep as a tool to both find deep dupes but also to move them easily as well.

    Thanks

    David

    Soooo....any timescales on the implementation of 'standard' file selection options in the results pane yet...I've bought Deep now but it's still frustrating not to be able to tag effectively in the program especially as the Drop Zone is now missing from Leap...I've actually resorted to using Punakea for quick & dirty tagging tasks...!

    Actually...one other little annoyance is that there seems to be no logic to the 'sort order' in the results pane (and no apparent means of specifying one). It doesn't seem to be based on name, creation or modify date, and actually seems pretty random. As I often take a batch of images and name them sequentially, the ability to sort by name in Deep and then apply tags on a sequence of images would be useful...any thoughts?
  2.
    I agree completely with enkaytee about these points:
    It would be helpful to have ALL the subfolders shown in the location area.
    It would be helpful to have the images load in the same sort order every time, preferably by subfolder after subfolder.
    Another request is the ability to exclude images by tag, like I can in Leap. That would be super helpful...

    But in general I love using all four apps. Great work guys - they are all well thought out and (otherwise) have great interface design.

    <strong>Guest:</strong><br /><br />Very cool program. However, I only use Aperture (not iPhoto). Therefore, this program does not search my aperture library. Any plans to make the aperture library readable and searchable for my canon .cr2 raw images?

    Guest:

    Glad you're liking Deep. Unfortunately, we cannot make the Aperture library searchable - this is something that Apple would have to do (trust me, it's frustrating for me too since I use Aperture myself.)

    Sorry.

    ... no "two words" tagging? :'-(
    (typing a "space" closes the tag)

    ... oh... and still does not support DNG 5.5 (I know... I know... that's Apple and that's why I use LR ;-)

    I don't use Deep, but you might try prefixing your multi-word tags with a " quote character. Related topics:

    sjk is correct. Prefixing with a quote lets you enter multiword Tags.
  3.
    Two ways to type multiword tags in ironic products (soon Leap 2.5 too)

    "two words"

    and

    two%20words

    We had people who wanted tags with the _ character in them, so had to change.

    Digital Negative Format - DNG. One thinks that there should be a QuickLook plug-in for them?

    did not see one here, though...

    thanks sjk, bluefrog and tom. gave a quick read at "the multi words tagging method" thread and... as someone wrote the "comma method" (the one, btw, I'm already using in LR) would be a much easier and natural option. anyway...

    tom: the issue with DNG is that... Deep does not see (list) those at all!!! :-(
    I have to use the 5.5 version because is the only one I can convert my Leica's (D-Lux 4) raws to and for some incomprehensible reason Apple *has chosen* (can't think of anything else, one year after this camera was released!!!) not to support either

    EDIT: sorry tom, you're right: it's "just" a preview (lacking of) issue. but it also means... Deep is useless for those files :'-(
  4.
    There are two things you need for Deep to work: Quicklook plugin to see the file contents, and for dng files to be recognized as being an image.

    Deep searches for all types of files called 'public.image' in their content type tree:

    What do you get when you type mdls /Users/you/Pictures/someDnGfile.dng

    Here are the results for a jpg file.

    Snow-Pro:ironic tandersen$ mdls /Volumes/Data/Users/tandersen/ironic/website/trunk/images/1.jpg
    kBackupStampOM = "1.jpg__3428711__65728243"
    kIronicPalette = "xs.0.8.7.9.10.t8560b"
    kMDItemBitsPerSample = 32
    kMDItemColorSpace = "RGB"
    kMDItemContentCreationDate = 2008-03-10 11:34:29 -0400
    kMDItemContentModificationDate = 2008-03-10 11:34:30 -0400
    kMDItemContentType = "public.jpeg"
    kMDItemContentTypeTree = (
    "public.jpeg",
    "public.image",
    "public.data",
    "public.item",
    "public.content"
    )
    kMDItemDisplayName = "1.jpg"
    ...
    ..

    If the content type for dng files is not set the content type will be something like 'dyn.xxxxxxxx'. If it is a dynamic type, that's good. All it would take is one application to tell the OS that dng files are images, and Deep would find them.

    For Deep to see them, there needs to be a quick look plugin for them. Third parties have written plugins for indesign files.

    ... it seems (as I'm reading in an Adobe Forum topic) this "Apple issue" with DNG 5.5 only applies to cameras (or lenses) using its new "lens correction" features, as my D-Lux 4 does :-(

    now I see why new Leica models will bundle Adobe LightRoom! ;-p
